The short answer

The short answerGST registration needs identity proof of the owner or signatory, proof of the place of business, bank details, and the entity's incorporation document if it is a company, LLP or firm. The address proof is the document officers query most: it must be a recent bill or property record in the owner's name, plus the owner's consent if rented.

Which documents do you need for GST Registration?

11 documents in 3 groups. The note under each one says what format works and how recent it must be.

For the owner, or each director or partner

  • PAN cardClear photo of the front, all four corners visible; the name must match Aadhaar exactly.
  • Aadhaar card, with the mobile number linked for OTP authenticationFront and back. The mobile number linked to it receives the OTPs.
  • A passport-size photoRecent, plain background, JPEG. A phone photo against a wall works.
  • Mobile number and email for the portal loginEach person's own number and email; OTPs go there.

For the place of business

  • Latest electricity bill, property tax receipt or municipal khata in the owner's nameIn the owner's name, recent, address matching the application.
  • Rent agreement, if the premises are rentedRegistered or notarised copy, all pages. Must name the premises exactly as on the bill.
  • No-objection or consent letter from the owner, including a family memberSigned by the owner named on the utility bill. We send a one-page draft.

For a company, LLP or partnership firm

  • Certificate of Incorporation or the partnership deedThe PDF issued by the MCA, or the deed as executed on stamp paper.
  • Entity PAN
  • Board resolution or authorisation letter naming the authorised signatoryOn the entity's letterhead, signed; we draft it.
  • Digital signature of the authorised signatory (companies and LLPs)Class 3, valid on the filing date. We apply for one if you do not have it.

Why do applications get rejected?

  1. Address proof in the wrong name

The electricity bill or property tax receipt must be in the name of the owner who signs the consent letter, not a previous tenant or a builder.

  2. Consent letter missing for a home office

Working from a family member's flat is fine, but the officer wants their NOC and their bill together. One without the other gets a query.

  3. Business description too vague

'Trading' or 'services' without goods or SAC codes draws a REG-03 query. We write the description with the HSN or SAC codes.

  4. Photo or signature not matching the PAN name

The authorised signatory's name in the application must match PAN exactly, initials included.

  5. Aadhaar authentication skipped

Without Aadhaar authentication the officer can order physical verification, which adds weeks. We complete it on the day of filing.

Questions founders ask about GST Registration documents

What address proof does the GST officer accept?

The latest electricity bill, property tax receipt or municipal khata copy in the owner's name. If the premises are rented, add the rent agreement and a no-objection or consent letter from the owner. For a co-working space, the operator's agreement and NOC work. The document should be recent, ideally within the last two to three months.

Can I register GST from my home address?

Yes. Provide the utility bill or property tax receipt in the owner's name and a consent letter if the owner is a family member. The officer may still order a physical verification of the address, so a nameplate and a working address help.

What does a company or LLP need beyond the owner's KYC?

The Certificate of Incorporation, the entity's PAN, a board resolution or authorisation letter naming the authorised signatory, and that signatory's Class 3 digital signature. The signatory's own PAN, Aadhaar and photo are also uploaded.

Do I need a bank account before applying?

No. Bank details can be added on the portal within 30 days of the GSTIN being issued, and many banks open the current account only after seeing the GST certificate. We add the account details for you once it is open.

What if my application gets a REG-03 query?

You have seven working days to reply with the corrected document or clarification. We reply within a day as part of the fee. If the reply is not accepted the application is rejected and a fresh one is filed, which is why we check the address proof against the usual objections before filing.
