We send the split with the invoice fields you need to show, and answer one question about your rate or place of supply if you have one.
How this works
In exclusive mode the calculator multiplies the base amount by the rate you choose (5%, 18% or 40%, or a custom rate for the few items outside the main slabs) and shows the tax and the total the customer pays.
In inclusive mode it works backwards from the total using base equals total divided by one plus the rate, which is the correct method when a price is quoted with GST included and you need the taxable value for the invoice.
It then splits the tax into CGST and SGST in equal halves for a supply within a state, or shows the full amount as IGST for a supply to another state or a union territory without a legislature, based on the supplier and customer locations you select.
The calculator assumes the rate you enter is the right one for your goods or services; it does not classify HSN or SAC codes, apply cess, or handle composition scheme rates, and the invoice format rules are covered on our GST filing page.
Questions founders ask about the gst calculator
What GST rate applies to my service?
Most services are taxed at 18%. A few, such as certain transport, job work and hospitality services, are at 5%, and some are exempt. The rate depends on the SAC code for the service, which our GST registration team confirms when you register, so you invoice at the right rate from the first bill.
When do I charge IGST instead of CGST and SGST?
When the place of supply is in a different state from your registration, or the customer is outside India. For most services the place of supply is the customer's location; for goods it is where the goods are delivered. Within the same state, split the tax equally into CGST and SGST.
How do I calculate GST from an inclusive price?
Divide the inclusive price by one plus the rate. A price of ₹1,180 inclusive of 18% GST has a base of ₹1,000 and tax of ₹180. Quoting GST-inclusive prices to consumers is common, but the invoice must still show the taxable value and the tax separately.
Does the calculator handle the composition scheme?
No. Composition dealers do not charge GST on invoices; they pay a flat 1%, 5% or 6% on turnover from their own pocket and issue a bill of supply. The calculator is for regular taxpayers who charge GST and claim input credit. See our comparison of regular and composition GST for which suits you.
