Do you need TDS return filing?

It fits if you

You pay salaries and issue Form 16

Salary TDS goes in Form 24Q every quarter, with each employee's regime choice and investment declarations, and Form 16 must reach them by 15 June.

You pay rent, contractors, professionals or commission

Payments above the section thresholds (as per the current Finance Act) carry TDS at 1% to 10%, reported in Form 26Q. Skip the deduction and 30% of the expense is disallowed in your own return.

You pay a non-resident, or are buying property from one

Payments to non-residents fall under Section 195 and Form 27Q, with treaty rates that need a tax residency certificate. A property bought from an NRI has TDS on the whole price.

Transparent pricing. Government fees itemised, always.

Professional fees below are per quarter or per year as shown and exclude GST. Late fees, if any, are paid to the government at cost.

What happens every month and every quarter

The deposit is monthly, the return is quarterly, and the certificates follow the return.

    Payment list and rate check

You share the month's salary, rent, contractor, professional and commission payments. We confirm the section, rate and threshold for each, and flag payees without a valid PAN, where the rate jumps to 20%.

We prepare the challan by section and you pay it online through the income tax portal. For March the date is 30 April. A single day late costs interest for a whole month, so the reminder goes out on the 5th.

Six mistakes we see every week

  1. Depositing on the 8th

Interest for late deposit is 1.5% for every month or part of a month from the date of deduction. TDS deducted on the 31st and paid on the 8th counts as two months: 3% for a one-day slip.

  2. Deducting late, or not at all

Late deduction carries 1% a month, and an expense on which TDS was not deducted or deposited is 30% disallowed in your own income tax computation under 40(a)(ia).

  3. Wrong section or rate

A designer paid under 194C at 1% instead of 194J at 10% is a short deduction, with interest and a demand. We fix the section on the payment list before the challan, not after the notice.

  4. A vendor without a valid PAN

TDS jumps to 20% under 206AA and the vendor cannot claim the credit. We validate every PAN on TRACES before the return, which also stops the PAN error defaults.

  5. Filing late because one challan is missing

The late fee under 234E is ₹200 per day up to the TDS amount, and a return more than a year late attracts a penalty of ₹10,000 to ₹1 lakh under 271H. File on time and add the challan by correction.

  6. Ignoring TRACES intimations

A default under 200A grows with interest every month it sits unread, and the vendor's Form 26AS keeps showing a mismatch. We check TRACES after every filing and clear defaults while they are small.

Questions founders ask about TDS Returns

How much does TDS return filing cost?

Our fee starts at from ₹1,499 per quarter per quarter for one return with up to 50 deductees, including challan verification and Form 16 or 16A generation. The yearly plans cover all four quarters with rate advice on each payment and lower deduction certificate support. Late fees under Section 234E, if you have any, are paid to the government at cost.

How long does TDS return filing take?

Two to three working days from the payment register to the filed return, most of it spent matching challans and validating PANs. The quarterly return is due on 31 July, 31 October, 31 January and 31 May; we start two weeks after the quarter ends. Form 16A follows within 15 days of the due date, and Form 16 by 15 June.

Who has to deduct TDS and file returns?

Every company, LLP and partnership firm, and any individual or HUF whose business was under tax audit in the previous year, must deduct TDS on payments above the section thresholds (as per the current Finance Act) and hold a TAN. Individuals outside audit deduct only on property purchases above ₹50 lakh (Form 26QB) and rent above ₹50,000 a month (Form 26QC), without a TAN.

What are the TDS due dates?

Deposit the TDS deducted in a month by the 7th of the next month, and by 30 April for March. File the quarterly return by 31 July, 31 October, 31 January and 31 May. Issue Form 16A within 15 days of each return due date and Form 16 to employees by 15 June. Property TDS in Form 26QB is due within 30 days of the month end.

What is the late fee under Section 234E?

₹200 for every day the quarterly return is late, from the due date until it is filed, capped at the TDS amount in the return. It is a fee, not a penalty, so it cannot be waived and must be paid before the return is accepted. A return more than a year late can also draw a penalty of ₹10,000 to ₹1 lakh under Section 271H.

What is the interest for late deduction or late deposit?

Interest is 1% per month or part of a month from the date TDS should have been deducted until it was, and 1.5% per month or part of a month from deduction until deposit. Because part months count as full months, a deposit on the 8th instead of the 7th can cost 3% of the tax. Interest is paid through the same challan.

What is the difference between Form 24Q, 26Q and 27Q?

Form 24Q reports TDS on salaries, with the employee-wise salary and tax details that feed Form 16. Form 26Q reports TDS on all other payments to residents: rent, contractors, professional fees, commission, interest. Form 27Q reports payments to non-residents under Section 195. A business that pays both salaries and vendors files 24Q and 26Q every quarter.

When do I issue Form 16 and Form 16A?

Form 16 goes to every employee by 15 June, after the fourth-quarter 24Q is filed. Form 16A goes to every other deductee within 15 days of each quarterly return's due date. Both are generated on TRACES from the filed return, so a late or incorrect return delays the certificates and the credit your vendors and staff see in Form 26AS.

What is a lower deduction certificate?

A certificate under Section 197 that lets a payee receive payments at a lower or nil TDS rate because their actual tax liability is lower. The payee applies in Form 13 on TRACES with projected income; the officer issues it for the year. It is common for loss-making companies, NRIs selling property and vendors with thin margins. We support the application and the deductor-side setup.

What are the common TDS rates and thresholds?

Contractors 1% for individuals and 2% for others (194C); professional fees 10% (194J); rent 10% for buildings and 2% for machinery (194I); commission 2% (194H); salary at slab rates (192). Without a PAN, 20% applies. Each section has its own threshold, as per the current Finance Act; we confirm the rates and thresholds for your payments on the call.

Can I correct a TDS return after filing?

Yes. A correction statement can add a missed challan, fix a PAN, change an amount or add a deductee, using the consolidated file downloaded from TRACES. There is no fee for a correction, but interest on any short deduction still applies. For a shortfall where the payee has already paid tax on the income, Form 26A can remove the deductor's liability.

What happens if I never obtained a TAN?

Apply for one now in Form 49B; it takes about a week. Every quarter of TDS that should have been deducted is still due with interest, and each unfiled return runs the 234E clock from its original due date up to the TDS amount. We list the missed quarters, compute the interest and fees, and file them in order so the exposure stops growing.
