Udyam
What Udyam means, where you will meet it and what it means for your business.
DefinitionUdyam registration is the free, instant online registration of a micro, small or medium enterprise with the Ministry of MSME, based on investment and turnover, giving a Udyam number and certificate.
Any proprietorship, firm, LLP or company can register on the Udyam portal with Aadhaar and PAN in about ten minutes, at no cost. The portal classifies you as micro (investment up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover up to ₹10 crore), small or medium using data pulled from ITR and GST returns, and issues a certificate that updates automatically. You meet it when a customer or bank asks for your MSME certificate, when claiming the ₹4,500 trademark fee, when applying for CGTMSE or Mudra loans, and when filing government tenders that reserve quotas for MSMEs. What it means for you: registered micro and small suppliers must be paid within 45 days by law, buyers must report delays in MSME-1, and unpaid amounts cannot be deducted by the buyer under Section 43B(h), which gives your invoices real teeth.
