MIS

What MIS means, where you will meet it and what it means for your business.

DefinitionMIS (management information system) reports are the monthly pack of financial and operating numbers a business reviews to run itself: revenue, margins, cash, receivables, burn and key metrics against plan.

Books of account tell you what happened for the tax department; MIS tells you what it means for the business. A good monthly MIS has a profit and loss statement against budget, a cash flow and runway view, receivables and payables ageing, GST and TDS liabilities, unit economics such as revenue per customer, and the three or four metrics your investors track. It is usually ready by the 10th of the following month. You meet MIS when a board or investor asks for it, when applying for a loan, and when you first cannot explain where the cash went. What it means for you: clean, reconciled books are the raw material, so bookkeeping and MIS are one job, not two. Founders who review MIS monthly catch pricing, collection and cost problems a quarter earlier than those who wait for audited accounts.
