DPIIT
What DPIIT means, where you will meet it and what it means for your business.
DefinitionDPIIT is the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, the central government department that grants Startup India recognition and administers the benefits attached to it.
DPIIT sits under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and runs the Startup India programme. A private limited company, LLP or registered partnership that is under ten years old, has turnover under ₹100 crore and works on innovation or a scalable model can apply online for DPIIT recognition with a brief and its incorporation documents. Recognition is free and usually comes within a couple of weeks. What it unlocks: the right to apply for the Section 80-IAC tax holiday, self-certification under several labour and environment laws, a 50% rebate on trademark fees and 80% on patent fees, easier public procurement, and faster winding up. You meet DPIIT again when applying for 80-IAC through its inter-ministerial board, and when investors ask for the recognition certificate during diligence.
